Humble Comment on the Election Results and Biden’s Visit to Cape Verde

The recently concluded elections in Cape Verde are a significant reflection of our democratic system and an invitation for deeper contemplation on the future of our country.

Firstly, I would like to express my admiration for all the citizens who participated, whether as voters or candidates. Democracy thrives on participation, and every vote counts as a voice on the path to progress. However, we cannot ignore the high abstention rate, which highlights an urgent concern: the disengagement of youth and the disconnection of many Cape Verdeans from the political future of the country.

It is essential that we view these figures not merely as election results but as a sign that we need to involve more Cape Verdeans in decision-making processes and renew trust in institutions. The future of Cape Verde depends on open dialogue, inclusive policies, and creating real opportunities for young people to remain and thrive in their own country.

President Biden’s Visit: An Opportunity for Reflection

President Joe Biden’s visit to Cape Verde is a historic milestone and a clear indication of our archipelago’s strategic relevance on the international stage. However, this moment also brings an important lesson: the necessity of maintaining Cape Verde’s neutrality, focusing on its sovereignty and national interests.

Being a point of connection between continents is an advantage but also a responsibility. The primary focus must be on protecting what we hold most valuable: our people. Without engaged youth, without entrepreneurs with opportunities to grow, and without policies prioritising social well-being, any external investment will be insufficient to ensure sustainable development.

Visits by international leaders are significant, but the true impact will be felt when the ordinary Cape Verdean, the one who struggles daily, experiences tangible improvements in their life. This requires us to look beyond geopolitical alliances and concentrate on internal strengthening — on our infrastructure, human resources, and capacity to innovate.

A New Vision for Cape Verde

As a Cape Verdean, I see the potential of Cape Verde in every sector, from tourism to technological innovation. However, the success of our country should not be measured solely in numbers or gross economic growth but in the positive impact that this growth has on people’s lives.

We need a development plan that places people at the centre of decision-making.
We need policies that encourage young people to stay, offering them not just jobs but careers and opportunities to become entrepreneurs.
We need political and economic renewal that brings fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a focus on tangible results.

If the world already believes in Cape Verde, it is time for us, Cape Verdeans, to believe more in ourselves. We have talent, we have resilience, and we have a clear vision of what we want for the future. Now, it is necessary to act with courage, intelligence, and unity to build the Cape Verde we dream of — a prosperous, inclusive, and strong Cape Verde.

With respect and commitment,
Mónica Sofia Duarte
